Why Do Cats Sleep So Much?

Does it seem like your cat is constantly sleeping? If so, this is pretty typical behaviour for a feline. 15 hours a day is about average, and some cats spend just a handful of hours awake each day. But you might wonder why it is that cats seem to spend such a huge percentage of the time asleep.
According to Encyclopedia Britannica, “Cats are natural predators. Their prey is quick and elusive. Sneaking up and pouncing—repeatedly—is undoubtedly exhausting. Cats in the wild work hard in order to meet their dietary needs, and expending that kind of physical effort requires a lot of recharging.”
You might be thinking, “But my cat hangs out indoors. There is no stalking of prey—just food in a bowl. Why the need for so much recharging?”
Britannica says that the main reason is that it is in their genes. Their biological clocks are adapted to that lifestyle. It is built in, and even with a peaceful indoor lifestyle, they still need to spend most of their time sleeping.
To ensure that your kitty’s rest is relaxing and restorative, you can invest in a high-quality cat bed. For example, you might consider our Polka Dot Cat Bed made from 100% soft cotton with a comfy filling of PP cotton.

The thing is, cats also sleep a lot if they are not entertained. So, you may also want to consider getting your kitty a fun toy. Consider our Cat Scratching Post that comes with a fun ball.
