Does My Cat Have Separation Anxiety?

A lot of people think of cats as being independent creatures that do not really “need” humans. But that is something of a stereotype, and does not capture the full reality of feline social requirements. In fact, some cats can be very attached to their humans, and may even experience separation anxiety in their absence.

Do you think your kitty might have separation anxiety? Here are some possible signs that your cat can’t stand you being away:

  • Your cat is grooming more than usual in the absence of their favorite person.
  • Your kitty is going on a destructive tear. You will typically see this behavior more often in males than in females.
  • The cat is sometimes eliminating in random places in your home rather than in the litter box.
  • There may be changes in how your cat is eating. They might be chowing down food like there’s no tomorrow, or they could be eating less than usual. In extreme cases, they might even refuse food.
  • Coughing up more fur balls or vomiting more than usual may be signs.
  • As with dogs, cats my yowl when lonely.

There are a lot of tips and tricks that can help you manage separation anxiety in your cat. But you should start by seeing your vet to make sure there are no underlying medical problems. As for helping your pet cope when you’re away, providing fun toys is a good start.
